The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO), in collaboration with PlayQuest’s BC team, has officially opened the new inclusive playground at Mission Creek Park in Kelowna. With a project value of 480,000 CAD, this state-of-the-art space is already bustling with activity and excitement from local families.
“You should be able to access any public infrastructure, whether it is a mobility challenge or a sensory challenge,” said RDCO Chair, Loyal Wooldridge. “Everyone deserves the opportunity to enjoy these public spaces just like everybody else.”
At the heart of the playground is its poured rubber surface, designed to ensure accessibility for people of all ages and abilities. Parents, grandparents, and children using mobility devices can now navigate the play space seamlessly.

“Rubber makes it a fully inclusive and accessibility surface,” explained Cassandra Desmarais, Project Consultant at PlayQuest. “Whether you are a parent in a wheelchair or a child in a wheelchair, it gives you the ability to reach every part of the playground.”
Beyond the surface, the equipment layout emphasizes ground-level play, slides, and swings that create shared experiences for all children, moving beyond traditional designs of ramps and stairs to deliver a truly inclusive environment.
Inclusivity was the driver of this project, and the result is clear. Mission Creek Park now offers a vibrant and welcoming space where every child can play, connect, and grow together.
