For over six decades, Kensington Elementary School in Edmonton has been without a playground, but that all changed in fall 2024 with the opening of their incredible new inclusive playground! After receiving a grant from Alberta Blue Cross and extensive fundraising efforts by the parent council, the school is now home to a play area designed to welcome and engage children of all abilities.

A Playground Worth the Wait
Kensington School’s playground stands out with its state-of-the-art pour-in-place rubber surfacing, ensuring safety and accessibility for every child. The playground features a variety of inclusive elements that were thoughtfully incorporated to create a welcoming environment. Highlights include:
- An in-ground merry-go-round and roller platform for dynamic play.
- Movmnt electronic game with roll-up features, encouraging interactive fun.
- A communication board to enhance social interaction.
- A sensory seat and an accessible circuit slide for diverse play experiences.
One of the most exciting features is the in-ground trampoline, a first of its kind in Edmonton, providing an exhilarating bounce that kids will love!
Community Spirit in Action
The journey to Kensington Elementary School’s first-ever playground was powered by the relentless efforts of the Kensington parent association, who held countless fundraisers—from bake sales to casino nights—to bring this project to life. In an interview with Postmedia‘s Jason Hills, Monica Marchand, president of the parent association, shared, “It was a pretty rough ride… but we plugged ahead, and when we received the grant, I started to bawl. It’s been overwhelming because kids at our school have never had a playground.”
This playground stands as more than just a place for fun; it reflects the community’s dedication to creating inclusive and engaging spaces where all children can play and thrive together.

A New Era of Play
Kensington School’s playground is a testament to the power of community and the importance of inclusivity. As students explore the unique climbers, gymnastics bars, and exciting circuit layout, this playground will foster friendships, physical activity, and a sense of belonging for years to come.
With the opening of this remarkable playground, Kensington Elementary School is ready to inspire play, learning, and connection among its students!
